Gang Sheets: What They Are and How to Get the Most Out of Every Print

Everything you need to know about gang sheets — how to build one, what sizes to choose, and how to slash your cost-per-transfer.

If you're ordering DTF transfers and you're not using gang sheets, you're leaving money on the table. Gang sheets are one of the most effective ways to reduce your cost-per-print — and they're simpler to set up than most people expect. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Gang Sheet?

A gang sheet is a single large DTF transfer film that has multiple designs packed onto it side by side, instead of printing each design on its own individual sheet. Instead of ordering 10 separate transfers at full price each, you pack all 10 onto one film and pay for the film area — dramatically lowering your cost per design.

The term "gang" comes from old printing industry slang — "gang printing" means combining multiple jobs onto one press run. Same idea, applied to DTF.

Example:10 individual 4"×4" transfers ordered separately might cost $35. Pack them all on one gang sheet and the same quantity could cost $18–22 depending on how efficiently you lay them out. That's real margin.

How Gang Sheets Are Priced

Unlike individual transfers, gang sheets are priced by the sheet dimensions, not by design count. At PhantomForge, our sheets are always 12.95" wide and you choose the length:

Sheet SizePriceBest For
12.95" × 24"$18.00Small orders, testing designs
12.95" × 48"$32.00Brand launches, regular restocks
12.95" × 100"$58.00Production runs, high-volume drops

The math is simple: the more efficiently you pack designs onto the sheet, the lower your effective cost per print. A 12.95" × 48" sheet at $32 can hold 8–12 full-size designs — that's under $4 per design if you pack it well.

How to Build a Gang Sheet

Option 1: Upload a pre-built layout

If you want full control, build the sheet yourself in Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva at the exact dimensions (e.g. 12.95" × 48" at 300 DPI) and upload a single flat file. Keep designs at least 0.25" apart so they're easy to cut.

Option 2: Upload individual designs and let us lay them out

Upload your individual PNG or AI files and we'll arrange them to make the most of the sheet area. This is the easiest option if you're not confident in design software. There's no extra charge for layout assist.

File Requirements

  • Format: PNG (transparent background), PDF, or AI
  • Resolution: 300 DPI minimum at print size
  • Background: Transparent (not white) for PNG files — this is critical. A white background will print as white.
  • Colour mode: RGB (we convert to our print profile)
  • Bleed: Not required — DTF transfers don't need bleed

Mixing Designs on One Sheet

You can mix completely different designs on the same gang sheet — different logos, different clients, different colourways. There's no restriction on design diversity. The only constraint is that all designs on the sheet print at the same time, so you can't mix different adhesive types (but we only use one anyway).

How to Cut Your Gang Sheet

Once you receive your sheet, you cut out each individual design before pressing. Leave a small margin around each design (2–3mm is ideal — too tight and the edge can peel, too much and you'll see the film border on the garment). A good rotary cutter or sharp scissors work fine. No special equipment needed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Designing at screen resolution (72 DPI): Your file will look blurry when printed. Always work at 300 DPI.
  • White backgrounds on PNG files: These print as solid white rectangles. Remove the background before uploading.
  • Packing designs too tightly: Leave at least 0.25" between designs to make cutting clean and easy.
  • Not specifying sizes: Tell us the actual dimensions you want each design printed at, not the file dimensions.

Ready to Start?

Gang sheets are the fastest way to scale your print operation without scaling your costs. Whether you're a solo brand owner or running B2B wholesale, they're almost always the right choice over individual transfers for quantities above 3–4 designs.
